□The transformation of distribution channels has become a major concern for publishing institutions from 2023 to 2024. There has been a shift in book topic dissemination and user purchasing habits from major platforms to new media interest-based e-commerce platforms. Additionally, with the recovery of offline economy, the advantages of distinctive physical bookstores in providing experiential products, gathering readers and promoting book discussions are gradually emerging. How does Shanghai Translation Publishing House (STPH) view these changes?
■The year 2023 saw a more fragmented China's book retail market. The change trend of distribution channels becomes more distinct, indicating that we have fully stepped into the era of “traffic is king”.
This trend can be traced back not long before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ebb and flow of traffic reveals its impact on the online platforms even then. The traditional e-commerce platforms, which once made a huge impact on physical bookstores, have experienced sluggish growth; while interest-based e-commerce, represented by livestream commerce, has quickly taken over the market since the outbreak of the pandemic. This manifests the fact that the private traffic-based new business logic has gradually taken place of the traditional e-commerce one which was based on scale and low price.
We, STPH, have perceived this trend keenly. We believe this is a development of market structure. It will help to further break the information asymmetry dilemma between consumers (readers) and suppliers (publishers), which is the root cause of the persistent channel monopoly that has long caused market segmentation and price distortion in the book industry.
We notice changes happening on both sides in the “traffic era”. On the demand side, readers are now spending much more on reading a book than buying, which indicates an interest-oriented guidance is more important than search word guidance. On the supply side, the branding and private traffic aggregation are increasingly showing significant value.
For sellers, traffic is also decisive, and price can no longer be taken as a fundamental competitive tool. In brief, distribution channel must be a traffic aggregation point in the future, and a seller must build his own characteristics and gather private traffic to survive. As traffic comes from the products and the professionalism embodied in the marketing capabilities, a seller should be more concerned about a publisher's brand influence and its ability to provide products with traffic. While as a supplier, a publisher must make a portrait of distributors in advance, and give preference to those distribution channels with traffic value and sales expertise. At the same time, it can establish its own sales channel at low cost to achieve the monetization of the brand and private traffic value.
□How did STPH perform overall in 2023? What were the main highlights?
■It is based on the aforementioned understanding that we have started the establishment of a new marketing system based on brand-guided private traffic since 2020. Fundamentally, we have promoted the transformation and upgrading of the branding strategy towards stimulating and creating reading needs; built an integrated content provision structure with copyright operation as its core, combining print book, e-book, audio book, creative products and courses; and created a traffic entry and sales exit for high-quality reading experiences with “full types of copyrights, various forms of works”. In terms of sales, we worked on developing a new retail pattern that fully integrates marketing and sales, establishing a self-operated e-commerce system from scratch, gathering and undertaking private traffic of own brand, and riding the house off excessive reliance on traditional e-commerce platforms.
Last year, we once again seized the trend of the emergence of new physical independent bookstores. In terms of livestream commerce, we actively combined self-operated livestream with improving service capabilities for various online platforms, community official accounts and influencers, to explore the potential of various forms to drive traffic and increase purchase value. Through these adjustments, we effectively resisted the impact of the lockdown due to the pandemic and the sharp decline of traditional e-commerce sales, and maintained the overall stability and growth of sales.
□In 2024, which internationally renowned publishing institutions will STPH collaborate with in terms of international cooperation?
■In 2024, the publishing industry is poised for action, and STPH also has new initiatives and plans. In terms of publishing, STPH will further collaborate with time-honored Japanese publisher Kodansha and Shueisha on non-fiction titles, and will hold a signing ceremony with Italian publisher Atlantyca to launch new editions of the popular children's book series Agatha Mystery. In terms of marketing, STPH has invited Nobel laureate author Abdulrazak Gurnah to visit China. Starting from Shanghai, STPH will promote the author and his works towards nationwide market. In terms of international licensing, foreign language editions of Shuang Xuetao's work, licensed by STPH to Mexico, Lithuania and other countries through RCW Literary Agency, are anticipated to be published soon.
Meanwhile, STPH has built certain influence in the field of original books. Its original popular science book 100 Tips For Families of Cancer Patients has won the Shanghai Outstanding Popular Science Work Award, the China Outstanding Popular Science Book Award, and The 17th Wenjin Book Award Recommended Books in the Popular Science Category shortly after its publication, and Doctor, What's on Your Mind? entered the Recommended Books of China's Good Books, attracting publishers from several countries to negotiate translation rights. In addition to the previous achievement, STPH is continuously expanding international licensing channels and entering new fields. In this upcoming May, as the president of the publishing house, I will lead a delegation to visit Southeast Asian countries, meeting old and new friends, hoping to establish a reverse copyright importing channel by availing ourselves of long-term cooperative agencies, thus creating a unique model of STPH's going global.
