In 2023, literary giants remain diligent and prolific, producing high-quality works consistently. Among young writers, new stars have emerged, ensuring that literary creation continues to maintain vibrant energy. Works that reflect reality and the era are presented for readers. Those pieces portraying great times through ordinary figures provoke contemplation on various aspects of work and life, keeping up closely with the development of the times.
Jin Yucheng
Jin Yucheng was born in 1952 in Shanghai, with ancestral roots in Lili Town, Wujiang District of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. His notable works include Blossoms(《繁花》), Looking Back (《回望》), Light Chilly (《轻寒》), etc. He has received several literary awards, including Mao Dun Literature Prize, Lu Xun Literary Prize, and Award of Chinese Language literature Media.
In December 2023, the TV series adaptation of Jin Yucheng's novel Blossoms was broadcast. Except for the comments on the plot, actors, and the fidelity of the adaptation to the novel, discussions about the era, Shanghai dialect, and cuisine have kept the novel and TV series in the spotlight, resonating emotionally with many people.
Set against the backdrop of Shanghai in 1990s, the book narrates the fates of numerous ordinary people amidst the changes of the times. When discussing the theme of the work, Jin Yucheng expressed, “Beautiful flowers don't bloom forever. Cherish life. Time has already slipped away. Listening to an old song, recalling a past event, it's like facing an old videotape that I completely forgot. Opening it up, suddenly it comes back to life. The people and events from the past reappear, triggering endless emotions—neither happiness, nor sorrow. The revived details evoke inexpressible feelings. ” With nearly 30 years of experience in literary editing, Jin Yucheng has gained a deeper understanding of the current landscape of writing. He said, “In the exploration and experiment of novels, there were many conscious attempts in the 1980s. Starting from the 1990s, with the rise of films and TV series, it attracted writers to pay more attention to the completeness of the story. Therefore, the homogenization in novel narration is quite evident. ” Hence, he often repeats: “If the writer becomes powerless, he/she should seek strength from tradition. ”
Yu Hua
Yu Hua was born in April 1960 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. His notable works include To Live (《活着》), Chronicle of a Blood Merchant (《许三观卖血记》), The Lost City (《文城》), etc. His works have been translated into 35 languages, and published in 37 countries and regions. He has received international awards such as the Italian Grinzane Cavour Prize, the French Order of Arts and Letters, and the Russian Yasnaya Polyana Literary Award.
In October 2023, the film adaptation of Yu Hua's novel Only the River Flows (《河边的错误》) was released. The original work was first published in the January 1988 issue of Zhong Shan (《钟山》) magazine. It is considered one of Yu Hua's most representative avantgarde novels. The story unfolds a series of serial murders in a small southern town in the 1980s. Yu Hua admitted that Only the River Flows was a trap for film and television adaptations. Four directors and production companies attempted to adapt the work but eventually gave up. He praised director Wei Shujun for capturing the essence of the original work, faithfully reproducing the lifestyle of that era, and excelling in depicting the details of characters, even surpassing the original ending.
In December 2023, the French magazine Paris Review published an interview with Yu Hua in its special column “Interview”. The interview was conducted by the renowned translator Michael Berry. Yu Hua became the first Chinese writer to be interviewed by Paris Review. Berry, who has known Yu Hua for many years, remarked that during the interview, “I saw glimpses of the same quick humor, biting sarcasm, and disarming honesty”.
Chen Yan
Chen Yan was born in 1963 in Zhen'an County, Shangluo City, Shaanxi Province. His representative works include Story of the West Capital (《西京故事》), The Backstage Clan (《装台》), Looking While Walking (《边走边看》), etc. He has been honoured with literary awards including Cao Yu Drama Literature Award, Wu Cheng'en Prize for Novels, and Mao Dun Literature Prize.
Chen Yan mentioned that the initial draft of the novel Starry Sky and Half a Tree (《星空与半棵树》) was written after completing the novel Story of the West Capital. This book is written intermittently, because there are many things that still need the passage of time, and he has therefore put it down. He then continued to write the Stage Trilogy, consisting of The Backstage Clan, The Protagonist (《主角》) and Comedy (《喜剧》).
In Chen Yan's perspective, life and novels are akin to the state of a tree. The more extensive the root system, the sturdier the trunk, the more complex the side branches, and the more intricate the leaves and stems, the more enduring and meaningful it becomes. Novel is a meticulous grooming and combing of the tree of life. Ultimately, novel is an art form that writes about people. Starting from the fate of one or several individuals to the fate of a group, it naturally extends to the real, temporal, and historical destinies. While each story is unique, with significant differences in the societal backdrop they open up, the starting and ending points will always be grounded in individuals who are tangible and relatable. Regardless of their diverse cultures and life circumstances, and how they confront various hardships, they ultimately contribute to shaping both individuality and commonality.
Zhou Xuanpu
Zhou Xuanpu was born in January 1970 in Linying County, Luohe City, Henan Province. Zhou Xuanpu is known for works such as The Embayed (《多湾》), The Sun Is Nearer Than Chang'an (《日近长安远》), and Summer's Lingering Dreams (《夏日残梦》). She has received awards such as the Chinese Women's Literature Award, Liu Qing Literature Award, and Henan Province's “Five-One Project” Award.
Zhou Xuanpu's Fragrance (《芬芳》) focuses on the growth of female characters. They may be small, ordinary, and facing numerous challenges in fate, but they are virtuous, resilient, and they never give up.
“In fact, in the vast countryside, almost every family can write a book. ” Zhou Xuanpu said. Writing Fragrance was not a momentary impulse. Those familiar stories had long existed in her past years, happening truthfully on the land of central China. She believes that real life is extremely colorful because every event in life is closely related to the pace of the times and policy changes. Whichever way the wind blows, people tend to follow. “Through my writing, I want to tell the world that Chinese people used to live like this. I want those fellow villagers who have silently lived their lives to be seen by more people. ”
Hu Anyan
Hu Anyan was born in 1979 in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. He started writing online in 2009. In 2019, he shared his working experiences at a delivery company on Douban. The post attracted an impressive 300,000 views. Eventually, he compiled and revised these stories, publishing his first non-fiction collection, I Deliver Express in Beijing (《我在北京送快递》) in March 2023.
Many people affectionately refer to Hu Anyan as the “courier writer”. He admitted, “by telling my real experiences, I realized something I wanted to do but couldn't when writing novels, which is establishing resonance with more readers about life. ” For him, the importance of writing is self-evident. “It is the point of my life, an important spiritual support, and the essence of my being.”
When discussing future writing plans, he mentioned the American author Jerome David Salinger. “Salinger is my idol, and I have been deeply moved by his works. I hope that I can leave behind truly valuable and meaningful works like Salinger that touch people with similar spiritual qualities from different eras, spreading encouragement, comfort, warmth, and courage. ”
